Last Saturday was a day a day of firsts for the Tuskegee Uni-
versity football team. It was the first home game and, more
importantly, the first victory of the season in three outings for
the Golden Tigers.
It marked the first win for Tuskegee under new head coach
Rick Comegy and his all-new coaching staff and the first "W" for
many newcomers on the roster.
The Golden Tigers attempt to make it two straight wins with
their second home game in a row as Miles College visits Saturn
day. In past years, one could just about put anticipate a win
when Miles appeared on the schedule. That's not the case any
more as former standout Chicago Bears' defensive back Cecil
Leonard has quickly made Miles' football respectable, so
respectable that the Golden Bears are 3-0 on the young season
and lead the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a
2-0 record. TU is 1-1 in the SIAC, making Saturday's 1 p.m.
clash a pivotal one in the conference.
In its thrilling 21-10 victory over Morris Brown last Saturday
at Alumni Bowl, the Golden Tigers welcomed back Andre Daw-
son as a key performer in the offensive backfield. Dawson con-
tributed for the first time since going down in last year's season
opener with a major knee injury that led to his getting a medical
hardship redshirt season.
Dawson saw limited duty two weeks ago, but responded with
116 yards rushing on 15 carries against Morris Brown after car-
rying the ball only twice going into the game. Dawson's 1-yard
TD early in the fourth period and Heath Gathercole's third extra
point of the game lifted TU to the win.
TU had earlier touchdowns on a 10-yard pass from normal
defensive end Marcus Wiggins to fullback Larry Guilford on a
high snap on a field goal attempt. Wiggins also had a 37-yard
fumble return for a six-pointer as the Golden Tigers came up
with two interceptions and three fumble recoveries. Wide receiv-
er Terran Burrell caught seven of TU's 10 completions for 110
yards. Quarterback Grant Mitchell was 8-of-22 passing for 137
yards with one interception.
