That's probably what Macon County teachers, students, administrators and parents are thinking as classes begin for the county schools on Wednesday, Aug. That's two days after teachers report for an Aug. 7 institute day and an Aug. 8 pro- fessional development day. This year, Macon Schools go into the school calen- dar with a little less pressure. The entire system was on Alert II entering the 1999-2000 school term, but managed to improve test scores enough to earn Caution status. Had the system not made the required improve, schools in the county would have been subject to state takeover for academic opera- tions. The system has been under control of the State Board of Education for finances since July of 1996, but has been financially in the black for near- ly two years. The 2000-2001 school year promises to be one of change. Interim superintendez:t Clima White has tendered his resignation. A search is on for a full- time superintendent. Last week, Ethel Greene accepted a position as principal of Cloverdale Junior High School in Montgomery. The Macon County Board of Education (MCBOE) is expected to accept her res- ignation as principal of D.C. Wolfe School at its Thursday meeting. Because of legal requirements of advertising for Greene's replacement, a fulltime principal probably won't be in place for D.C. Wolfe until after the school term begins. There will also be a new member of the MCBOE as t~ty Campbell takes office this fall to replace current board member Earnest Washington who lost to Campbell in a recent election for the six-year term. Orientation Set at BTW; Graduation Exams Slated Orientation dates for those who will be students at Booker T. Washington High School will be Friday, Aug. 4 from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. There will be a general meeting in the gymnasium at 9 a.m. for all students (new and returning) to include grades 9- 12 and transitioning 8th graders. (Most 8th graders will now attend Tuskegeo Institute Middle School where grades 6-8 will locate). These advancing to the the grade will remain at Washington Public and Tuskegee Public, rather than advancing to TIMS as in recent past. Station A at orientation for BTW students will be registration form completion for new students and retundng students with new addresses. Station is for fee payments: Locker, $5; Parking Decal, $5; and I.D. Card, $6. Schedule pickup will be: Station C, transitioning 8th graders; Station D, 9th graders; Station E, 10th graders; Station F, llth graders; and Station G, 12th graders. ID photos will also be taken. On Saturday, Aug. 5, orientation will be' from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. with the same basic schedule as Friday. For any questions, call the BTW office at 727-0073. Registration for all students at TIMS will be Aug. 7-8 from 7:15 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Graduation examinatiens will be conducted Aug. 1-3. Check wi'th your school counselor for more details.
