Clothing Giveaway Star in the East Chapter 128, Order of the Eastern Star, will have a clothing and household goods giveaway to the needy. The event will be Saturday, May 22, beginning at 9 a.m. in the square in Tuskegee. RSVP FoodSource Distribution Day The Macon County RSVP FoodSource Distribution Day will be Saturday, May 22, from 7-9 a.m. Tuskegee-Macon YMCA for Senior Citizens Senior citizens are invited to fellowship and participate in recreational activities at the Tuskegee-Macon County YMCA on Tuesdays arm Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Play (or learn to play) bridge, pinochle, chess, whist and other table games. GED Testing GED testing will be conduct- ed each Monday, except holi- days, at the Tuskegee University Testing Center. For more information, call 727- 8240. America Reads Program The America Reads Challenge is now in Tuskegee. America Reads challenges every American to help a child learn to read by the end of the third grade. The challenge came from the President's Summit after learning that 40 percent of American fourth-grade stu- dents read below the basic read- ing level. Reading Buddies give from half an hour to three hours a week working with a child at a local elementary school or in the after-school reading pro- gram. The hours are flexible. East Alabama Task Force For Battered Women The East Alabama Task Force for Battered Women is there for those who need its services in Macon, Lee, Chambers, Tallapoosa and Randolph Counties. Call the Task Force Office at (334) 749-1515 in Opelika for the location of meet- ings. Collect calls are accepted. You may call collect. Business hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday for more information. Task Force For Battered Women The East Alabama Task Force for battered women is looking for volunteers for a court-moni- toring program in Macon County. Volunteers will attend various court dates and provide victims of domestic violence with information regarding resources available to them. Macon County DHR Volunteer Drivers The Macon County Department of Human Resources, 430 North Main Street, Tuskegee, needs addi- tional volunteer drivers who hold valid drivers licenses. Contact Adult Services Intake at 727-1960. Southern Care Hospice Southern Care Hospice is looking for caring individuals who are interested in volunteer- ing their time to help others. Alcoholics Anonymous The location of Alcoholics Anonymous meetings in Tuskegee are as follows: Thursday, 8 p.m. in Macon County Annex Conference Room on Elm Street and Saturday, 8 p.m. in Shorter's City Hall. Diabetes Health Education Living with Diabetes Health Education series is scheduled each first Friday of the month from noon-1 p.m. at St. Andrews'Episcopal Church. Adrianne C. Lee, R.N., M.S.N., is facilitator. Tuskegee Alliance for the Mentally Ill Support Group The Tuskegee Alliance for the Mentally Ill will meet from 6- 7:30 p.m. at Tuskegee Municipal Complex (moved from Grace Community Center) on the third Thursday of each month. These meetings are for families who have members with mental illness and need a support group to help them cope with a sometimes difficult situ- ation. The meetings are open and members do not have to attend every month to stay active, only as the need arises. For more information, call 724- 9080. Local Mercedes Benz Club continues community service The Mercedes Benz Club recently celebrated the seventh anniversary of the club founded April 2, 1992 at the Tuskegee Inn (now the Western Inn) when Georgia Alexander, Mildred Sims, Kerry Benson, Wilhamenia Pace, Herschel Carter Jr., Thomas Wilkerson and Edna Henry decided to show their love for the com- munity. The group chose many projects and chose a main project, which is giving a scholarship to a deserving student. On April 6, this prestigious group began its celebration with a seven-year member memories chat and chew, and on April 8, Mercedes Edna Henry hosted a Spring Fling at her home. The Mercedes Benz's celebra- tion ended with a gala event at the NCO Nile Club on April 10. Members are: Georgia Alexander, president; Edna Henry, vice president; Mary Knight, secretary; Bobby Denson, treasurer; Brian Knight, chaplain; and Herschel Carter Jr, sergeant at arms. The other member is Lee Ducksworth.
