Page B-2, The Tuskegee News THA 12-and-under boys basketball team wins state Tuskegee Housing Authoritys 12-and-under boys basketball team (THA Tigers) won several state honors this year. Coached by Clifford Patrick (Housing Authority Employee) and Leon Lane (resident volunteer), the THA Tigers took first place as league champions for the YMCA, second place for the area championship/YMCA, ~nd third place,, Alabama Public Housing Basketball Tournament, which was held in Gadsden March 28-31. By earning this honor, THA Tigers have been invited to participate in the Annual Alabama/Kentucky Hoops Challenge in Birmingham May 21-23. Top teams from Alabama and Kentucky public housing will com- pete. In Gadsden, there were 15 other teams competing in {he 12-and-under boys division. During the basketball season, in addition to competing in the YMCA league, the THA Tigers competed with other neighboring housing authority teams. Their record, prior the Alabama state public housing tournament, for the year was 14-3. The tournament held in Gadsden was the 7th Annual Public Housing State Championship Basketball Tournament. Alabama was the first state to start such a tournament, now about seven other states have started. The tournament is held in a different city of Alabama each year. You must be either a resident of public housing or Section 8 to compete. In addition to the 12-and-under boys, Tuskegee Housing Authority sponsored two other teams, 15-and-under girls (THA Lady Hornets), consist- ing of: Sylbrena Johnson, Kishir Daniel, Kartea Howard, Veronica Jackson, Shaquita Watson, Kniya Ligon, Shayna Hodges, Rosetta Joyner, LaToya Williams and Cherita Tyner. Coached by Ruffus Benson (THA Employee), with assistance of Ms. Marcella Simpson (THA Employee), the THA Lady Hornets season record was 15-1 prior to the State Tournament. The other team competing in Gadsden was the the THA Bulls (15-and-under boys). Coached by THA's Sports Coordinator, Ronald "Shag" Crawford, they had a successful season with a record of 14-2. Members of this team are: Roger Oliver, Jason Levett, Larry Williams, Jerry Powell, Jermaine Wilson, Dorsey Echols, Sean Championship team The Tuskegee Housing Authority's 12-and-under boys basketball team won several honors this year. Sullins, Umar Taqqee and Earl Fields. The Housing Authority is now practicing for its softball and baseball seasons. At the end of the season there will be a annual softball tourna- ment held somewhere in the state of Alabama, with various teams from several housing author- ities throughout the state competing. The age groups (females and males) are: 15-and-under, and 18-and-under. A licensee of Thrifty Rent-A-Car System, TU football camp scheduled The Fourth Annual Rick Comegy Youth Football Camp at Tuskegee University has been scheduled in early June. The camp is run by TU head coach and athletic director Rick Comegy and his staff. Comegy's Golden Tiger Tuskegee team won the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) champi- onship in 1998 while compiling a 10-2 record and winning the Pioneer Bowl. The youth camp is scheduled for June 1-3 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day and on June 4 from 8 a.m. until noon. Washington High School Fundamental and Team Basketball Camp will be June 7-11, at the BTW High School gymnasium. Hours will be from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. daily and the camp is open for boys and girls ages 8~16. Cost is $50 a camper. All participants will receive a t-shirt. The camp is sponsored by the BTW High School Athletic Department. I I II BTW hosting football jamboree Coach Bernie Patrick's Booker T. Washington Golden Eagle foot- ball team of 65 players will host a spring jamboree Thursday, May 20, at 7 p.m. at BTW. The game will be against the Sidney Lanier Poets of, Montgomery. There will be four 12-minute quarters with the ball being put in play at the 35-yard line without kickoffs. However, there will be a modified punting game used. A concession stand will be open. BTW was 5-5 during the 1998 season.
