In 1941, Mrs. Carter personally met Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt when the First Lady came to Tuskegee to take that historic flight with Charles "Chief' Anderson, the father of Black Aviation. It was on that historic flight in Tuskegee that Mrs. Roosevelt famously said, " %yell, you can fly alright." History also records that a young Mildred Hemmons was there for that historic flight that convinced Mrs. Roosevelt to sanction the training program to teach young African American men to fly and hence, they would become famously known as the Tuskegee Airmen. Years later, Mildred and her future husband, Herbert "Gene" Carter became known as the "First Couple of Aviation," flying on aerial dates in separate airplanes in a union that lasted for nearly 70 years. Our Chapter is also proud that he became Colonel Carter, an original member of the Tuskegee Airmen. Mrs. Carter was born on September 14, 1921. The beautiful, intelligent, petite young female pilot in Jodhpurs and a flight jacket was an aviator, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and a leading citizen of Tuskegee, who is perhaps best known as a graduate of the Tuskegee Civilian Pilot Program (CPT), authorized by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the precursor of the Tuskegee Airmen. As a member of Mildred Hernmons Carter the Tuskegee (AL) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, the late Mildred Louise Hemmons Carter served her community and the Chapter from induction until her death. Since the 1962 chartering, the Chapter has contributed more than 70,000 hours ofcommunity service and donated over $400,000 to local charitable organizations and Tuskegee University. In memory of Mildred Louise Hemmons Carter, The Tuskegee (AL) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, officially supports the 100 jet trainer project that is proposed by Leonardo DRS to be built at historic Moton Field, the original home of the Tuskegee Airmen. The Tuskegee (AL) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, also strongly encourages the United States Air Force to select Leonardo DRS and the 100 jet trainer that will continue the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen which includes our beloved Mildred Louise Hemmons Carter and train the next. generation of fighter pilots. We, The Tuskegee (AL) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, proudly support the next generation of aerospace manufactixring in Tuskegee where Mildred Louise Hemmons Carter learned to fly and where she became famously known as the first African American female pilot in Alabama and in the South. We honor her and support the qXl00 jet trainer for Tuskegee in her honor and memory.
